Scorekeeper’s Guide – Tips for Scoring in the USA Pool League

USAPL 8-Ball Scorekeeper’s Guide

Scorekeepers are required to initial under the Set #____. This will help the League Manager in case of a question.

It is courteous to score at least (1) set for your team – either before or after you have played your own match. It makes it more fun for everyone on the team if the score keeping duties are shared, rather than burden one or two people with all of the scoring. It also gets everyone on the team more involved in the match and gets everyone some valuable experience in score keeping procedures.

Missed shots are an important part of the rating and handicap system and should be given the proper consideration. See the guidelines below to assist you in determining what is a “Missed Shot.”

Independent data is not only welcome, but is an essential part of the handicap system. So don’t worry if your score sheet is not identical to your opponent’s. It’s not supposed to be.

“MISSED SHOTS” -

DO mark a missed shot when all the following criteria are met and the player misses the shot:

1. a. The player has a direct line of sight to the object ball

                b. The player has an “Open” pocket in which the object ball can be pocketed. The shot could be a

straight in shot, cut shot, carom shot, a billiard, combination shot, or a one rail bank shot (Multiple rails – see “g.)”

                      below)

                c. The Shot can be made with a normal / typical stroke (No special techniques or tricks needed).

            2. Cue Ball Scratches – If a player has an open shot, makes the shot but also scratches, this is a player error and a

                 “missed shot” should be recorded.

NOT “MISSED SHOTS” -

The Break - The break is a “FREE” shot. Never mark a missed shot no matter what happens on the break.

Safeties

a.)    Player calls a “Safety” or defensive shot.

b.)    Player does not call a “Safety” but had no intention of pocketing a ball. One such example would be a player lagging a ball in front of a pocket for defensive or strategic purposes

c.)    Any shot that is strictly “DEFENSIVE” in nature.

d.)    If a player shoots a shot that involves multiple rails, a missed shot should not be recorded.

e.)    If a player intentionally fouls a missed shot should not be recorded.

Jump, Masse, and Kick Shots – If you are “Hooked or snookered” (do not have a direct line of sight from the cue ball to the

object ball) and you are forced to jump, kick, or masse the cue ball to try to make a shot, a “Missed Shot” should not be marked.

Game Scoring

The winner of each game will always receive “14” points (No matter how the game was won), and the loser of the game will receive one point for every ball in their group that was pocketed, no matter how they were pocketed.

Break & Run – When a player breaks and runs the entire rack to win the game, put “BR” in the game score box and simply count as 14 points when totaling the “Total Score.”

Table Run – When the “Non breaking player” runs the table on their first turn at the table. Mark “TR” in the game score box and count as 14 points when totaling the score.

Win Zip – Winning player wins on their second turn or more and holds the losing player to zero points. Mark “WZ” in the game score box and count as 14 when totaling the score.

Note: Teams may be required to “double-up” matches (play on multiple tables) as needed to complete play by a reasonable time.

USAPL 9-Ball Scorekeeper’s Guide

Scorekeepers are required to initial under the Set #____. This will help the League Manager in case of a question.

Missed shots are an important part of the rating and handicap system and should be given the proper consideration. See the guidelines below to assist you in determining what is considered a “Missed Shot.” Remember that 9-ball is NOT a “Call Shot” game, so if a player legally pockets a ball in a pocket other than the one they were intending, it counts for a point(s) for the shooter, they continue to shoot, and it does NOT get marked as a “Missed Shot.”

Independent data is not only welcome, but is an essential part of the handicap system. So don’t worry if your score sheet is not identical to your opponent’s. It’s not supposed to be.

The score sheet with the individual games scores and “missed shots” must be completely filled out every league night, however the “Team Totals Score Sheet” is optional. When the USAPL Manager enters the game scores in LeagueSys, it will do all the computations and totals for you. Ask your League Manager for the LeagueSys website to see all team and MVP standings.

“MISSED SHOTS” -

DO mark a missed shot on the score sheet when either of the following three scenarios occur.

1. a. Player has a direct line of sight to the object ball (is not hooked or snookered).

                b. Player has an “Open” pocket in which the object ball can be pocketed.

The shot could be a straight in shot, cut shot, carom shot, a billiard, combination shot, or a one rail bank shot

(Multiple rails – see “d” below).

                c. The Shot can be made with a normal / typical stroke (No special techniques or tricks needed).

            2. The player’s “Intent” is to pocket a ball. If a player shoots hard into multiple balls with the intent of

pocketing a ball, and does not legally pocket a ball, then a missed shot should be recorded.

            3. Scratches – If a player has an open shot (direct line of sight to the object ball), legally pockets a ball, but

also scratches in the process, this is considered a player error and a  “missed shot” should be recorded.

NOT “MISSED SHOTS” -

The Break - The break is a “FREE” shot. Never mark a missed shot no matter what happens on the break.

Safeties

a.)    Player’s “Intent” was a safety or defensive in nature.

b.)    Player had no intention of pocketing a ball.

c.)    If a player shoots a shot that involves multiple rails, a missed shot should not be recorded.

d.)    If a player intentionally fouls a missed shot should not be recorded.

The winner of each game will always receive “14” points (No matter how the game was won), and the loser of the game will receive one point for every ball legally pocketed, no matter how they were pocketed. (Shooter does not have to call pocket)

Break & Run – When a player breaks and runs the rack (pockets a minimum of 5 balls) to win the game, put “BR” in the game score box and simply count as 14 points when totaling the “Total Score.”

Table Run – When the “Non breaking player” runs the table (pockets a minimum of 5 balls) on their first turn at the table. Mark “TR” in the game score box and count as 14 points when totaling the score.

Win Zip – Winning player wins on their second turn or more and holds the losing player to zero points. Mark “WZ” in the game score box and count as 14 when totaling the score.

9-Ball On The Break – You can not win or lose on the break in USAPL 9-ball. If a player makes the 9-ball with a legal break shot, it will be spotted and the player will continue to shoot. No points are given for the 9-ball in this instance.

If a player makes the 9-ball on the break and commits a foul, then the 9-ball would be spotted and the incoming player will take “Ball in Hand” and place the cue ball anywhere on the table that they like, and shoot from there.

Don’t Forget – Play Hard, Play Fair, HAVE FUN !!!
